Health and wellbeing definitions and their differences

Health and wellbeing are intertwined but are not the same. However, both health and wellbeing are vital to living a long and fulfilling life.

Health

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), health is defined as a complete state of mental, physical and social wellbeing with absence of disease and infirmity.

Physical health

Physical health refers to the condition of our body that encompasses fitness, nutrition, and prevention of diseases. The first part of physical health is fitness, which is your body’s ability to keep up with daily activities with optimal performance and prevent having sedentary lifestyle. Nutrition is about having a balanced diet to maintain a healthy weight and to prevent diseases. Physical health also refers to the choices we make. For instance, having a lack of sleep, drink or smoking can all have harmful affects

Mental health

Mental health refers to emotional and psychological wellbeing. This is about managing stress through creating coping mechanism, anxiety and depression. Emotions often fluctuate but creating a way to cope with these emotion can create better mindset and therefore your mental health.

Social health

Social connections are crucial for having good mental health. Creating strong bonds with family, friends and parts of community can lead to greater happiness and contribute to overall well-being.

Environmental health

Environment health refers to the surroundings impact on your health. This can be things like accessing clean air, water and safe living conditions. These can have great impact on health and your wellbeing.

 

Well-being 

Well-being is the combination of health, happiness and prosperity. This goes beyond being without disease and health. Wellbeing includes all health aspects but also include high life satisfaction and a sense of meaning or purpose. High life satisfaction meaning finding happiness and fulfilment from life. Sense of purpose is about understanding our role in society and the impact we have. In conclusion wellbeing emphasises not just the absence of negative factors but also having greater positive elements in our life.
